We've offered testimony and written letters, made calls, and talked directly to (then) Governor Marc Raciot and his aids on the absolute necessity of protecting the Yellowstone Buffalo - last oroginal heard - from commercial slaughter... We've not been very successful.

The Bison of Yellowstone park in Wyoming are starving and are in danger of being eliminated entirely through slaughtering by the Montana Department of Livestock. Their search for food each Winter takes them onto private land, and Montana Rangers are killing them to allegedly stop the spread of disease.
Even more horrible is the fact that the animals are being shot by the MDOL rangers when they come off park land to eat. The Bison of Yellowstone National Park are the starving victims of budget cuts, exploited resources, and forgotten promises to protect our natural and animal resources on federal land. The YNP Bison, a sacred living religious symbol to all Native American Indian Nations, are the last wild bison in this country. Their quest for survival in the harshest Winter in decades, has taken them from the sanctuary of federally protected land, onto private land bordering the park in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. Natural barriers in Idaho and Wyoming have prevented much migration. In Montana's quest for the all mighty dollar, however, snowmobile trails were cleared to maximize Winter tourism. With the last natural barrier in Montana removed, Bison left the park in search of food only to be shot or penned, transported in cattle cars, slaughtered and auctioned by the Montana Department of Livestock. This atrocious act was allowed under the watchful eye of the Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) who has bullied Montana cattle growers with the threat of quarantine. Cattle, allowed to graze on federal land under land lease grants, transmitted Brucellosis (brucella abortus) which is purported to cause abortions in cattle. Amazingly, there is NOT EVEN ONE documented case of bison passing the disease back to cattle. At the beginning of the 1996-97 Winter, the original herd numbered approximately 3300. As of May 1st, only 625 remain. The threat of inbreeding and continued starvation is at hand. The killing continues. On May 1st, 1997, Governor Marc Racicot signed a bill (Montana HB547) which allows Montana's Department of Livestock to commercially slaughter and sell the remaining Yellowstone bison to "defray the costs (of the past winter) for the penning, tagging, and slaughter" of our Yellowstone bison. This establishes a dangerous precedent which threatens ALL National Park animal resources in ALL states! ARE YOU TICKED OFF YET? YOU CAN HELP! You can add your voice to ours. Do it because you wanna preserve Native American culture by saving the last living icon for our Nations. Do it because you love animals and think Ofelia the President's cow should get involved! Do it because you're tired of government officials thinking they are above the law and the will of the people. Do it because you like to bug government officials. Do it to show how sheer numbers can bring them down. Do it so that we'll stop nagging you. But, DO it. The time is NOW!

Amazingly, there is NOT EVEN ONE documented case of the bison passing a disease that officials fear causes spontaneous abortion in cows (Brucellosis). In fact, it has never even been proven that the disease is transmittable from buffalo to cow in the wilds. In the winter of 1996-97, there were 3300 Buffalo on Yellowstone. By spring, there were only 600. Bison have been senselessly slaughtered and disrespectfully - unceremoniously - auctioned. Some biologists fear that the nation's last free ranging bison population-- a remnant of the original 60,000,000 annihilated by hunters in the 19th century - will be annihilated in a matter of months. The slaughter continues.
